The Region of Murcia is one of the areas of Spain with the most motorhome potential and at the same time less known. In just 100 kilometers you go from the Mar Menor to the high mountain of Sierra Espuña, from the dry land of Lorca to the green valleys of the Northwest. If you have a motorhome or camper and you leave from Totana, where our dealership TTCamper is located, you have everything within an hour and a half of travel.

In this guide we have organized 7 proven routes that combine nature, gastronomy, real service areas and comfortable overnight stays. All are compatible with 7-meter motorhomes and most also with profiled ones and campers.

1. Mar Menor and La Manga (40-60 km from Totana)

The classic getaway for a weekend. From Totana on the A-7 highway towards Cartagena, you turn towards the RM-12 and in one hour you are in Los Urrutias or Mar de Cristal. It is an ideal destination for those traveling with children: shallow waters, quiet beaches and higher temperatures than the Mediterranean open all year round.

Recommended stops:

  • Los Nietos: municipal service area with emptying and filling. Beach 200 m away.
  • Cabo de Palos: iconic lighthouse, diving, caldero and rice restaurants.
  • Calblanque: regional park with virgin beaches. Important: check access during high season, sometimes they restrict it to residents.

Duration: 2-3 days is enough to see the area calmly. In winter it is still pleasant to walk and eat.

2. Sierra Espuña (25 km from Totana)

Practically next to our dealership. Sierra Espuña is a regional park with centuries-old pine forests, restored snow wells and hiking trails for all levels. In less than half an hour you can be at 1,400 meters of altitude with a temperature 10 °C cooler than on the coast.

Areas and points of interest:

  • La Perdiz recreational area: large parking compatible with motorhomes, tables, fountain.
  • Casa Forestal Huerta Espuña: base for excursions to Morrón de Espuña (1,583 m).
  • Snow Wells: constructions from the 16th-18th century to store snow. Essential visit.

It is not allowed to spend the night inside the park; There is a traditional campsite in Alhama de Murcia and private areas nearby.

3. Northwest of Murcia: Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz (80 km)

Green Murcia, not very touristy and very charming. Caravaca is one of the five holy cities of Europe (along with Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago and Santo Toribio), with a historic center declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

Moratalla is one of the most beautiful towns in the interior of Murcia, with its steep streets and the castle on top. The A-33 route takes you 1h15 from Totana.

Service areas:

  • Caravaca motorhome area: free, next to the industrial estate. Emptying and filling available.
  • Municipal area of Moratalla: around the football field, with good connection to the historic center.

4. Ricote Valley (60 km)

The last Andalusian stronghold in the Region. Towns hanging from the Ribera del Segura: Abarán, Blanca, Ojós, Ulea, Villanueva del Segura and Archena. Spectacular driving through gentle curves next to the river and a landscape of orchards, palm groves and citrus trees.

For 7 meter motorhomes, the road is narrow in some sections but passable. In the towns you find large squares where you can maneuver. Archena has a historic spa with the possibility of a spa day.

5. Costa Cálida south: Mazarrón, Bolnuevo and Calnegre (35 km)

Less crowded than the Mar Menor and with golden sand beaches. Bolnuevo has its famous eroded clays with lunar shapes and family beaches with municipal service areas.

Special mention to Calnegre and La Galera, virgin beaches on the border with Águilas. Not very crowded even in August, ideal for motorhomes looking for tranquility.

6. Jumilla and Yecla wine route (80 km)

Ideal plan for couples or adult groups. Denomination of origin with some of the best Monastrell in Spain. Wineries such as Bodegas Luzón, Silvano García or Casa Castillo offer guided tours and tastings, some with parking for motorhomes and the possibility of staying overnight (check beforehand).

Local gastronomy: Jumillano gazpachos, gachasmigas, rice with rabbit. A weekend of hiking with tasting and good meals is the most balanced that the region can offer.

7. Cartagena and historical getaway (55 km)

Cartagena has 3,000 years of history and its historic center proves it. Roman theater (one of the best preserved in Spain), Punic wall, Concepción castle, Roman forum. Perfectly visitable in 1-2 days.

To spend the night with a motorhome: municipal area of Cartagena on Trovero Marín avenue, with all services and 15 minutes walk from the center.

Practical tips for your motorhome route through Murcia

  • Ideal time: spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). July and August can exceed 40 °C indoors.
  • Motorhome areas: the Region has about 40 public service areas. Download an app like Park4Night or CampContact to locate them.
  • Water: most municipal areas have free drinking water. Always bring a reservation because some are closed in low season.
  • Fuel: cheap diesel in the Campo de Cartagena area and industrial areas. The price fluctuates quite a bit, check before filling up.
  • Prior check: if you are going on long routes, check tires, brakes and water systems before leaving. If you are not sure about any point, a mechanic specialized in motorhomes will check it for you in one morning.
