Motorhome routes through Murcia: 7 essential getaways from Totana

The Region of Murcia is one of the areas of Spain with the most potential for motorhome travel, yet it remains one of the least known. In just 100 kilometres you go from the Mar Menor to the high mountains of Sierra Espuña, from the dry plains of Lorca to the green valleys of the Northwest. In this guide, we've put together 7 tried-and-tested routes that combine nature, gastronomy, genuine service areas and comfortable overnight stops. All of them work with 7-metre motorhomes, and most also suit low-profiles and campers.

1. Mar Menor and La Manga (40-60 km from Totana)

The classic weekend getaway. From Totana along the A-7 motorway towards Cartagena, you turn onto the RM-12 and within an hour you're in Los Urrutias or Mar de Cristal. It's an ideal destination for anyone travelling with children: shallow waters, calm beaches and warmer temperatures than the open Mediterranean all year round.

Recommended stops:

• Los Nietos: municipal service area with waste and fresh water points. Beach 200 m away.

• Cabo de Palos: iconic lighthouse, diving, and restaurants serving caldero and rice dishes.

• Calblanque: regional park with unspoilt beaches. Important: check access during peak season, as it's sometimes restricted to residents.

Duration: 2-3 days is enough to see the area at a relaxed pace. In winter it's still pleasant for walking and eating out.

2. Sierra Espuña (25 km from Totana)

Practically next door to our dealership. Sierra Espuña is a regional park with centuries-old pine forests, restored snow wells and hiking trails for all levels. In under half an hour you can be at 1,400 metres above sea level, with temperatures 10°C cooler than on the coast.

Areas and points of interest:

• La Perdiz recreation area: spacious car park suitable for motorhomes, picnic tables, water fountain.

• Casa Forestal Huerta Espuña: base for hikes up to Morrón de Espuña (1,583 m).

• Pozos de la Nieve: 16th-18th century structures built to store snow. A must-see.

Overnight stays inside the park aren't allowed; there's a traditional campsite in Alhama de Murcia and nearby private areas.

3. Murcia's Northwest: Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz (80 km)

Green Murcia, off the tourist trail and full of charm. Caravaca is one of Europe's five holy cities (along with Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago and Santo Toribio), with a historic centre listed as a Site of Cultural Interest.

Moratalla is one of the prettiest towns in inland Murcia, with its steep streets and the castle perched above. The A-33 gets you there in 1h15 from Totana.

Service areas:

• Caravaca motorhome area: free, next to the industrial estate. Waste and fresh water points available.

• Moratalla municipal area: around the football ground, with good access to the historic centre.

4. Ricote Valley (60 km)

The last Andalusi stronghold in the Region. Towns clinging to the banks of the Segura: Abarán, Blanca, Ojós, Ulea, Villanueva del Segura and Archena. Spectacular driving along gentle bends beside the river, through a landscape of orchards, palm groves and citrus trees.

For 7-metre motorhomes, the road is narrow in places but manageable. The towns have plenty of open spaces to manoeuvre in. Archena has a historic spa with the option of a spa day.

5. Southern Costa Cálida: Mazarrón, Bolnuevo and Calnegre (35 km)

Less crowded than the Mar Menor, with golden sand beaches. Bolnuevo has its famous eroded clay formations with moon-like shapes, plus family-friendly beaches with municipal service areas.

Special mention for Calnegre and La Galera, unspoilt beaches on the border with Águilas. Rarely crowded even in August, ideal for motorhomers looking for peace and quiet.

6. Jumilla and Yecla wine route (80 km)

An ideal plan for couples or adult groups. A designation of origin producing some of Spain's finest monastrell wines. Wineries such as Bodegas Luzón, Silvano García and Casa Castillo offer guided tours and tastings, some with motorhome parking and the option to stay overnight (check in advance).

Local food: Jumilla-style gazpacho, gachasmigas, and rice with rabbit. A weekend trip combining tastings and good food is about as well-rounded as the region gets.

7. Cartagena and a historic getaway (55 km)

Cartagena has 3,000 years of history, and its old town shows it. A Roman theatre (one of the best preserved in Spain), Punic walls, Concepción Castle, and a Roman forum. Easily visited in 1-2 days.

For an overnight stay with your motorhome: Cartagena municipal area on Avenida Trovero Marín, with full services and a 15-minute walk from the centre.

Practical tips for your motorhome route around Murcia

• Best time to go: spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). July and August can top 40°C inland.

• Motorhome areas: the Region has nearly 40 public service areas. Download an app such as Park4Night or CampContact to find them.

• Water: most municipal areas have free drinking water. Always carry a reserve, as some are closed in the low season.

• Fuel: cheap diesel can be found around the Campo de Cartagena and industrial areas. Prices vary quite a bit, so check before filling up.

• Pre-trip check: if you're planning long routes, check the tyres, brakes and water systems before setting off. If you're not confident doing any of this yourself, a specialist motorhome mechanic can check it over in a morning.
