Profiled vs integral motorhome: which one to choose in 2026?
We compare the two best-selling types of motorhome: profiled and integral. Advantages, disadvantages, consumption, price and who each one is for. Guide to making the right decision.

It is the most recurring question in our dealership: profiled or integral? They are the two most sold types of motorhome in Europe and each one has its audience. Before spending between 40,000 and 90,000 euros, it is advisable to understand the real differences, not just the aesthetic ones.
In this guide, based on our experience selling both types on TTCamper for more than 15 years, we give you practical criteria to decide wisely.
What is a profiled motorhome?
The profiled is a motorhome built on a base chassis (usually Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter) that retains the manufacturer's original cabin. Above the cabin is mounted an aerodynamic overcab, lower and smaller than that of a nasturtium.
Three key ideas:
- The total height is usually around 2.85-2.95 m.
- The length ranges from 5.99 to 7.49 m in most models.
- Maintains the doors and windows of the base van cabin.
What is an integral motorhome?
The integral replaces the original chassis cabin with one built specifically for the motorhome, completely integrated with the cabin. Only the chassis, engine and mechanical elements remain from the original manufacturer.
Three key ideas:
- Typical height: 2.95-3.20 m.
- Length: between 6.50 and 7.80 m.
- Front panoramic window with 180° view from the day area.
Direct comparison: profiled vs integral
Livability and interior space
Winner: integral. By eliminating the original cabin and building on top, the integral gains a tilting bed that lowers from the roof and leaves the lounge area free. In the profiled version, the overcab (when it has one) is usually used for storage or as a less comfortable extra bed. The total volume of the integral is between 10% and 20% higher for the same exterior length.
Thermal and acoustic insulation
Winner: comprehensive. The base van cabin is not designed for travel in extreme conditions. It has more thermal bridges, worse soundproofing and large, poorly insulated windows. The integral one, being built with the same materials as the rest of the cabin (30-50 mm sandwich panel), offers uniform insulation. If you are going to travel to the mountains in winter, the difference is notable.
Driving and maneuverability
Winner: profiled. Being lower and more aerodynamic, the profiled drives more like a conventional large vehicle. It has less lateral air resistance, is easier to park and passes through lower clearances. Many integrals require a clearance of 3.10-3.20 m, which excludes them from some underground car parks and ferries.
Fuel consumption
Winner: profiled. A 3.5-tonne profiled consumes between 8 and 10 l/100 km on the highway at 110 km/h. An integral one of the same weight is around 9.5-11.5 l/100 km due to its worse aerodynamic coefficient and greater weight. Over 20,000 km per year, the difference is about €300 in fuel.
Purchase price
Winner: profiled. With the same equipment, brand and length, a profiled one costs between €8,000 and €15,000 less than an integral one. In the used market, this difference is maintained. If your budget is tight, the profiled model offers more vehicle per euro.
Tipping bed and living room flexibility
Winner: integral. The integral's electric tilting bed is stored in the roof during the day and used only at night. You don't have to assemble/disassemble the lounge to sleep. In the profiled one, if you do not have a fixed twin bed in the stern, the living room becomes a bed and every night you have to set up and take down.
Resale value
Tie. Both types sell well secondhand. The profiled ones have more global demand (more market), but the premium integral ones maintain the relative price better in brands such as Hymer, Carthago, Bürstner or Concorde.
