It replaces the vehicle's original cab entirely with bodywork built by the manufacturer, keeping only the chassis and mechanics. That gives a wider, brighter and better-insulated interior, and it is generally considered the top of the range.
Because the manufacturer builds the whole body instead of reusing the factory cab: more material, more insulation and more work. In return you gain interior width, a panoramic windscreen, a drop-down bed over the cab and, on many models, a double floor.
That is where it shows most. Better insulation and the double floor — which protects tanks and pipes from the cold — make it the most comfortable type for cold-season travel or long stays aboard.
It is wider and taller than a low-profile, so height and width limits matter. But forward visibility is the best of any type thanks to the panoramic windscreen, and all are driven on a category B licence as long as they stay under 3,500 kg.
